Chandigarh, June 1
Hundreds of farmers from different parts of Punjab marched towards Chandigarh on Monday, demanding resolution of long standing banking and agricultural loan-related issues. The protest, led by farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, prompted authorities to strengthen security arrangements across key entry points into the city.
Farmers traveling on tractors and on foot moved towards Chandigarh, planning to reach Sector 17. Organizers said the agitation was aimed at pressing for relief measures and addressing concerns related to loan settlements and banking practices affecting farmers.
As the march progressed, security was heightened across Chandigarh, with police personnel deployed at strategic locations. Senior officers remained on the ground to monitor the situation, while officials from Punjab Police and Chandigarh Police met with farmer leaders to prevent tensions from escalating and encourage dialogue.
Addressing supporters during the protest, Dallewal said the farmers would continue their agitation and warned that protesters were prepared to launch an indefinite sit-in if they were stopped from entering the city. He maintained that any formal discussions with authorities should take place only after suitable arrangements are made for the protesters.
Farmer groups participating in the march raised concerns about alleged irregularities in loan-related procedures. They claimed that borrowers are often required to provide cheques while obtaining loans and alleged that, in some cases, these cheques are not returned even after the loans have been repaid. According to the protesters, such practices can lead to financial and legal difficulties for farmers.
The protesters urged the government to address their concerns through meaningful discussions and take steps to resolve pending issues. Authorities, meanwhile, continued efforts to maintain law and order while exploring avenues for dialogue as the protest unfolded.
