Ludhiana, June 1
Two workers died and several others were injured after a gas leak at a wrench-manufacturing factory in Ludhiana, Punjab, triggering panic in the industrial area on Monday.
According to officials, the incident occurred while routine work was underway at the factory. A sudden leak from a gas pipeline or cylinder reportedly spread toxic fumes across the premises within minutes, leaving workers struggling to breathe and causing chaos inside the unit.
Eyewitnesses said employees complained of severe suffocation, breathing difficulties, and irritation in the eyes as the gas quickly filled the factory. Several workers collapsed unconscious on the spot before they could move to safety.
After receiving information about the incident, teams from the police, fire brigade, and health department rushed to the scene and launched rescue operations. The injured workers were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals, where some are stated to be in critical condition.
Authorities have confirmed the death of two workers due to suffocation caused by the gas leak. The identity of the deceased is yet to be officially disclosed.
The administration has initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the leak. Officials said the reason behind the accident would become clear only after the inquiry report is completed.
Meanwhile, the factory premises have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, and safety checks are being carried out in the surrounding area.
