The Himachal Pradesh government will conduct the 2027 Census in two phases across the state, with the exercise to be carried out digitally for the first time. Officials said the process will include a house listing and a housing census in the first phase, followed by a population enumeration in the second phase. A self-enumeration facility will also be made available for residents.

Director Census Operations cum Citizen Registration, Himachal Pradesh, Deep Shikha Sharma shared details of the census exercise while briefing Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on various aspects of Census 2027, according to an official statement issued on Monday.

Officials said the first phase, which includes House Listing and Housing Census, will be conducted from June 16 to July 15. Residents will also have the option of self-enumeration through the official portal from June 1 to 15.

The census exercise will be conducted digitally this time. Enumerators and supervisors will use mobile devices to collect information from households and families through a set of 33 questions notified by the government.

According to officials, the second phase, involving Population Enumeration, will take place in the state’s snow-bound areas from September 11 to 30. In the remaining parts of Himachal Pradesh, the exercise will be conducted from February 9 to 28, 2027.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the census plays an important role in democracy and development. He urged people to actively participate in the exercise, stating that census data helps the government prepare future development plans and policy decisions.

The upcoming Census 2027 exercise is expected to help the state government gather updated demographic and housing data, which will be used for administrative planning, welfare schemes, and future policy formulation.
