New Delhi, May 21
The X account of Cockroach Janata Party, a satirical online movement that recently gained massive attention on social media, was withheld in India on Thursday. Founder Abhijeet Dipke said the action came after alleged attempts to hack the account and announced that a new handle titled “Cockroach Is Back” had already been launched on the platform.
Dipke said the team plans to challenge the action legally. He claimed the account had witnessed rapid growth in recent days, attracting lakhs of followers and widespread engagement from young users, activists and political figures.
The movement emerged shortly after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s remarks during a court hearing sparked controversy online. The Chief Justice later clarified that his comments had been misquoted and were directed only at individuals entering professions using fake degrees.
What began as a meme and satire platform soon evolved into a broader digital movement discussing unemployment, examination paper leaks, education and governance issues through humour, graphics and online campaigns. The platform gained traction for its sharp political satire and youth-centric messaging.
Dipke said the group had expected action against the account after alleged hacking attempts a day earlier. He also claimed attempts were being made to target the platform’s Instagram account. Despite the X account being withheld in India, its Instagram presence remains active and continues to attract followers.
Several spin-off accounts using the “cockroach” branding remain active on X, reflecting the wider online engagement surrounding the movement. The platform’s growing popularity also drew reactions from politicians and activists, many of whom viewed it as a form of digital dissent driven by meme culture and youth frustration.
The Cockroach Janata Party website describes itself as a movement representing people ignored by the system. It highlights issues linked to unemployment and social inequality while presenting itself through satire and internet culture.
