Chandigarh, May 19
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday cycled from his official residence to Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake to encourage fuel conservation and promote healthy living. He appealed to people to use bicycles and public transport more often as the state government adopts measures to reduce fuel consumption.
The chief minister rode nearly three kilometres from his residence to Sukhna Lake, where he later interacted with members of the public during a morning walk. Security personnel accompanying him also used bicycles during the visit.
Speaking on the initiative, Saini urged citizens to rely more on bicycles, buses and trains, and use private vehicles only when necessary. He said the move was part of a wider effort to conserve fuel and use resources responsibly.
The Haryana government has introduced several measures following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve fuel. These include reducing the size of official convoys, encouraging virtual meetings in government departments, and limiting the use of government vehicles wherever possible.
Saini also announced that he would avoid using an official government vehicle one day every week as part of the campaign. He said that departments across Haryana have been issued standard operating procedures aimed at reducing fuel consumption, as per administrative requirements.
Referring to global concerns arising from tensions in West Asia, the chief minister said fuel conservation was a collective responsibility and called for public cooperation to address the challenge.
The Haryana government’s campaign reflects a broader push towards fuel conservation, efficient resource use and environmentally conscious governance. Officials believe the initiative will also help raise public awareness of healthier, more sustainable modes of transport.
