Himachal Pradesh Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh on Friday criticised the Central Government over the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices, stating that the increase would fuel inflation and negatively affect tourism, transport, and construction sectors in the hill state.

Addressing the media, Singh said the rise in fuel prices would directly burden common citizens, farmers, orchardists, and traders. He alleged that fuel prices were kept unchanged during the election period and raised immediately after the polls concluded.

“The increase in petrol and diesel prices will impact every sector. Tourism season is currently at its peak in Himachal Pradesh, and expensive fuel and gas will increase operational costs for hotels, dhabas, restaurants, and transport operators,” he said.

The minister also pointed out that higher diesel prices would increase freight costs, leading to higher construction material prices, such as cement, steel, and aluminium. Essential commodities, including vegetables, milk, and edible oil, are also likely to become more expensive, he added.

Expressing concern about infrastructure projects, Singh said the rising bitumen prices were adversely affecting road construction across the state. He urged the Centre to seriously consider the issue and provide relief to the public.

Commenting on the upcoming municipal corporation elections in four urban bodies, Vikramaditya Singh expressed confidence in the Congress party’s prospects. He said party leaders have actively participated in the campaign and claimed that the state government has worked consistently to secure central funds for development projects.

The minister revealed that proposals worth ₹5,400 crore were sent to the Centre for urban development, of which ₹1,200 crore has been approved so far.

Highlighting environmental concerns linked to increasing tourist inflow, Singh said waste management has emerged as a major challenge in Himachal Pradesh. He stated that the government is strengthening biogas plants and sewerage systems to improve waste disposal and protect the environment.
