Chandigarh, May 13

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in Haryana’s municipal elections, winning key mayoral posts in Panchkula, Sonipat and Ambala while tightening its hold over several civic bodies across the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Haryana and said the results reflected continued public faith in the BJP’s development agenda and the “double engine government”.

In a post on X, Modi described the outcome as a strong endorsement of the BJP-led NDA government’s policies and governance model. He also congratulated party workers for their role in the victory.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the civic poll results showed that people had once again placed their trust in the BJP’s programmes and leadership. He claimed the electorate had rejected the opposition and supported politics centred on development and transparency.

The BJP won the mayoral elections in Panchkula, Sonipat and Ambala by comfortable margins. In Panchkula, BJP candidate Shyamlal Bansal defeated Congress leader Sudha Bhardwaj by a margin of more than 36,000 votes. Rajiv Jain won the Sonipat mayoral seat for the BJP, while Akshita Saini emerged victorious in Ambala.

The party also performed strongly in ward elections across municipal corporations. In Panchkula, the BJP won 17 wards, while the Congress won just one. Similar trends were seen in Ambala and Sonipat, where the BJP secured a clear advantage over its rivals.

One of the most talked about results came from Uklana, where 23-year-old Independent candidate Rima Soni defeated BJP nominee Nikita Goyal by 2,806 votes. Soni received support from the Congress, which had not fielded its own candidate in the contest.

After her victory, Soni thanked the voters and said the support of local residents helped her secure the win. She said she came from an ordinary family and expressed gratitude to everyone who stood by her during the election.

The BJP also won the municipal committee election in Sampla, considered a stronghold of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Haryana BJP leaders said the result reflected growing support for the party even in areas traditionally seen as Congress bastions.

The Congress faced another disappointing performance in Haryana civic elections after failing to make a major impact in last year’s mayoral polls as well. Meanwhile, parties such as the Aam Aadmi Party and the Indian National Lok Dal were unable to register significant gains in the elections.

Haryana BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli said the civic poll outcome reflected public confidence in the BJP’s governance and development-focused politics. Former minister Kavita Jain also credited the party’s victory to its emphasis on development work across the state.
