The Jewellery traders in Himachal Pradesh have strongly objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal asking citizens to avoid purchasing gold jewellery for a year, saying the remark could adversely affect the gold trade and the livelihoods linked to it. The Himachal Pradesh Jewellers Association has also written to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking clarification on the statement.
The association said the advisory has created concern among jewellers and could impact the income of thousands of families dependent on the sector. It urged that such remarks should be avoided in the future, warning that they may unsettle market sentiment.
Himachal Pradesh Jewellers Association president Atul Tangri said the statement has caused deep concern within the trade. He said comments of this nature from those in leadership positions not only affect business activity but also impact families whose livelihoods depend on the traditional jewellery sector.
The association further said that gold jewellery should not be viewed solely as a luxury item, as it is closely linked to culture, emotions, savings, social customs and financial security. It added that discouraging gold purchases could create market uncertainty and affect business stability.
The body said economic challenges should be addressed through constructive policy measures instead of discouraging employment-generating sectors. It reiterated its request for clarification from the Prime Minister’s Office and urged restraint in making similar appeals in the future.
