Shimla, May 9

The 7th International Annual Art Exhibition organised by Mahasu Art Shimla commenced at the historic Gaiety Theatre in Shimla on Friday, bringing together artists from Himachal Pradesh and several other states to showcase their creative works.

The six-day exhibition, scheduled from May 9 to May 14, was inaugurated by former Member of Parliament and senior Congress leader Pratibha Singh. The exhibition features a wide range of paintings reflecting social issues, Himachali culture, and contemporary themes through artistic expression.

Addressing the gathering, Pratibha Singh said the artists had effectively portrayed societal concerns and cultural heritage through colours and canvas. She said the initiative aims to provide Mahasu Art with national and international recognition while encouraging local artistic talent.

During the programme, the Congress leader also expressed concern over the reported proposal to shift Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH) from its current location in Shimla. She said the hospital has long served as a major healthcare institution for women and newborns and warned that relocating it could create inconvenience for pregnant women and their attendants.

Pratibha Singh stated that the hospital was originally established keeping women’s accessibility and convenience in mind. She added that she would discuss the matter with the state government and urged authorities to consider public sentiment and practical difficulties before taking any final decision in the larger public interest.

Commenting on the upcoming Zila Parishad and urban local body elections, Singh said democracy provides every citizen the right to contest elections and contribute to public service. Responding to a question regarding the BJP contesting Zila Parishad elections on party lines, she said such practices were not new in politics.

She extended her best wishes to all candidates and asserted that the Congress party would contest the elections strongly. Referring to the recent election results in five states, Pratibha Singh said the party high command would seriously review the outcomes, organisational shortcomings, and future political strategy.
