Kolkata, May 6
The Election Commission has formally completed the process for constituting a new legislative assembly in West Bengal after the conclusion of the state elections, officials said. The commission issued an official notification to the Governor, a constitutional step required before the formation of a new government and the swearing-in of elected representatives.
A senior Election Commission official said the notification marked the end of the poll process from the commission’s side following the declaration of results.
“With the issuance of the notification, the constitutional process now moves towards government formation,” the official said, adding that the elections were conducted according to established legal and procedural norms.
The official said polling, counting and declaration of results were carried out in a “free, fair and transparent” manner.
The move comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in the 294-member assembly, winning 207 seats and bringing an end to the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.
The result is being seen as one of the BJP’s biggest electoral breakthroughs in eastern India.
