Shimla, May 1
Congress leader Kuldeep Singh Rathore on Friday raised concerns over the reduction in apple import duty under a Free Trade Agreement and sought compensation for orchardists affected by recent hailstorms, while also criticising rising fuel prices and the Center’s economic policies.
Speaking after a Congress organisational workshop in Kangra, Rathore said he discussed the challenges faced by Himachal Pradesh’s horticulture sector with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. He highlighted that the import duty on apples from New Zealand has been reduced from 50 percent to 25 percent, which could impact growers in Himachal Pradesh and other hill states.
Rathore said the issue was discussed in detail during a meeting with Gandhi, and efforts would be made to raise it at the national level. He added that a delegation of orchardists is expected to meet Gandhi in Delhi to present their concerns. He termed the issue as one affecting growers across the country and alleged that it has not received adequate attention from the Center.
He also criticised the recent increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices, stating that it would add to the financial burden on the public and lead to higher food prices. He expressed concern that domestic LPG prices may also rise in the near future.
On weather-related losses, Rathore said recent hailstorms have caused significant damage to apple crops and urged the government to carry out an immediate assessment. He demanded compensation for affected orchardists and called for relief measures, including a temporary halt on loan repayments.
Rathore’s remarks reflect growing concerns within the horticulture sector over trade policies, rising input costs, and climate-related risks, with demands for policy intervention and financial support likely to gain traction in the coming weeks.
