Gaurav Gera’s acclaimed performance in Aditya Dhar’s two-part spy saga Dhurandhar has been a proud moment for his long-time friend and former co-star Mona Singh. The duo, who rose to fame playing best friends Jassi and Nandu in the popular TV show Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (2003–2006), have maintained a close friendship and continue to support each other’s careers.
In Dhurandhar, Gera portrayed Mohammad Aalam, an Indian spy operating undercover as a juice vendor in the Lyari area of Karachi, Pakistan. His character secretly aided Ranveer Singh’s Hamza Ali Mazari in infiltrating the gang of Akshaye Khanna’s Rehman Dakait.
“Of course, it does feel like a personal victory. I feel so proud of him. He’s worked very hard and deserves all the appreciation and accolades coming his way,” Singh told PTI. “He’s always been there for me when my shows are released, giving inputs and feedback, and I’m the same for him. We’re both celebrating each other’s success.”
Singh herself is enjoying a successful run with performances in projects such as Laal Singh Chaddha, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, Made in Heaven, The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, and Kohrra.
The actors recently met in Amritsar while filming their respective projects—Singh for Kohrra 2 and Gera for Dhurandhar. Gera shared behind-the-scenes glimpses of his physical transformation for the role, including a salt-and-pepper beard, textured ageing, and cropped hair. Drawing from her own experience with strict NDAs during Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, Singh advised him not to reveal any details prematurely.
“When you’re passionate about your craft, you respect the NDAs and the effort that goes into creating a character,” Singh said. “I told him, ‘Mat kar,’ don’t show this to people, don’t talk about your craft.” She added that Gera, though excited, understood the importance of maintaining confidentiality.
