During a recent meeting of the Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh (FOSWAC), serious concerns were voiced over the deteriorating quality of public services in the city. According to Hindustan Times, led by Baljinder Singh Bittu, the gathering in Sector 35 brought together 86 representatives from various Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). Bittu strongly criticized the administration and municipal corporation for failing to deliver adequate services despite increasing taxes and charges. He also expressed frustration over the lack of progress on the much-anticipated Metro project, accusing the authorities of misleading the public by not submitting necessary documents to the concerned ministry, thereby stalling efforts to alleviate the city’s traffic congestion. Additionally, Bittu raised alarm over the unchecked proliferation of e-rickshaws, often operated by unlicensed and underage drivers, posing a significant threat to public safety.
The meeting saw a chorus of concerns from other RWA leaders, highlighting various civic issues plaguing the city. Dr. KS Chaudhary from Sector 38 West criticized the administration for its ongoing failure to address the Dadumajra garbage dump problem, which continues to cause distress for local residents despite repeated promises reported Hindustan Times. Further criticism was directed at the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) by Amardeep Singh from Sector 39, who lamented the neglect of long-standing grievances spanning over three decades. The discussion also touched upon rising crimes against women, inadequate parking, stray dog menace, and poor maintenance of parks and public toilets, reflecting a broader dissatisfaction with the city’s governance.
