Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said weapon systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) played a decisive role during Operation Sindoor, underlining the organisation’s professionalism and commitment to national security. Speaking during a visit to DRDO headquarters in New Delhi on Thursday to mark its 68th Foundation Day, he said the indigenous systems performed seamlessly during the operation and helped boost the morale of the armed forces.
He expressed confidence that DRDO would play a crucial role in developing the “Sudarshan Chakra” air defence initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address in 2025. Under the programme, DRDO is tasked with equipping vital installations with air defence systems to provide comprehensive aerial protection over the next decade. He said recent conflicts had highlighted the growing importance of air defence in modern warfare.
The defence minister praised DRDO for strengthening indigenous capabilities and for building trust alongside advanced technologies. He said increased collaboration with the private sector, academia and start-ups had helped create a more integrated defence ecosystem, with improvements seen in procurement, project management and industry engagement.
Calling for continued innovation, the Defence Minister urged the organisation to keep pace with rapidly evolving technologies and expand private sector participation, particularly in deep tech and next-generation systems. He said progress in these areas would enhance India’s capabilities and strengthen the broader defence ecosystem. During the visit, DRDO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Defence R and D, Samir V Kamat briefed the minister on ongoing research activities, achievements in 2025 and the organisation’s roadmap and reform measures for 2026.Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, along with senior scientists and officials, was also present.
