Punjab releases Rs 314 crore aid for orphaned, dependent children

The Punjab government has released more than ₹314 crore in financial assistance for orphaned and dependent children, under a welfare programme aimed at ensuring their education, dignity and long-term security. Sharing details in Chandigarh, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said ₹314.22 crore had been disbursed so far, benefiting over 2.37 lakh children across the state.
She said the initiative reflected the government’s commitment under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to support vulnerable sections of society, particularly children who have lost parental care or family support. According to the minister, regular financial assistance is being provided to help children continue their education, integrate into mainstream society and work towards a self-reliant future. “These children are not mere statistics. They are a collective responsibility of society,” Dr Baljit Kaur said.
Under the scheme, children below the age of 21 are eligible if both parents are deceased, missing, or physically or mentally incapacitated and unable to care for the family.
The Minister said that the programme went beyond monetary support and reflected a broader commitment to ensuring a safe, dignified and hopeful future for every child in Punjab. She added that the government was determined to ensure that no child’s education or aspirations were derailed due to poverty, neglect or compulsion.
