India summons Bangladesh envoy over security concerns

India has summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to New Delhi, Riaz Hamidullah, to convey what it described as strong concerns over a deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday. In a statement, the MEA said the envoy was informed about activities of certain extremist elements who have announced plans to create a security threat around the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. India, it added, “completely rejects” what it called a false narrative being promoted by such groups in connection with recent developments in Bangladesh.

The ministry said it was “unfortunate” that Bangladesh’s interim government had neither carried out a thorough investigation into the incidents nor shared substantive evidence with India.

India underlined that its relationship with Bangladesh is rooted in the 1971 liberation struggle and has since been strengthened through development cooperation and people-to-people ties. New Delhi said it supports peace and stability in Bangladesh and has consistently called for free, fair, inclusive and credible elections held in a peaceful environment.

The MEA also said it expects the interim government in Dhaka to ensure the safety and security of all diplomatic missions and posts in Bangladesh, in line with its international obligations.
