Chandigarh Press Club condemns police action against newspaper distribution in Punjab

The Chandigarh Press Club has strongly condemned Punjab Police for disrupting newspaper distribution across the state, describing the action as a serious violation of press freedom.

According to reports, newspaper delivery was severely affected in districts including Gurdaspur, Patiala, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur after police stopped and checked vehicles carrying publications. In several cases, delivery vehicles were allegedly detained at police stations, causing significant delays and harassment of staff.

“The act of intercepting vehicles transporting newspapers is deeply concerning and undermines the free flow of information,” the Press Club said in a statement. It urged the Punjab Government to intervene immediately and ensure the unhindered distribution of newspapers across the state.

President of the Chandigarh Press Club, Saurabh Duggal,termed the incident “an attempt to curb press freedom through administrative overreach” and called for accountability from the authorities involved.

The club reiterated that freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy and must be protected from any form of intimidation or interference.
