A new, deadlier strain of mpox (formerly monkeypox), identified in DR Congo and neighboring countries, is causing concern. Known as Clade Ib, it is more transmissible and has a higher mortality rate, particularly in children. The WHO is considering declaring an international emergency, as reported by the news outlet The Hindustan Times.
As of August 3, the African CDC reported 14,479 cases and 455 deaths in the DRC, with the virus spreading to Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Kenya. The disease is particularly severe in displacement camps in North Kivu, DRC.
Authorities are urging public education to prevent further spread. The outbreak, primarily affecting DR Congo and Central Africa, is now seen in regions previously unaffected by mpox.
