Uttarkashi, August 5

At least four people have died and 50 others are missing after a massive cloudburst triggered flash floods in the Dharali area near Harsil in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Tuesday. The cloudburst, which was caught on camera, led to the near-total destruction of a remote village, with houses and infrastructure washed away in the deluge. The sudden floodwaters have left several families unaccounted for, as rescue operations continue under extremely challenging conditions.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the loss and said the state government is committed to providing all possible assistance to the affected.

“Relief and rescue operations are being conducted on a war footing by teams from SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other related agencies,” the Chief Minister said in a statement in Hindi. He added that he is personally in touch with senior officials and is closely monitoring the situation.

The Chief Minister also prayed for the safety of those missing and reaffirmed that the government will extend every possible support to the victims.

Heavy rainfall and cloudbursts are frequent in the hill state during the monsoon season, often leading to flash floods, landslides, and significant loss of life and property.
