India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interest, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on Wednesday, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of 25% tariffs on Indian goods.

Reacting to the move, the ministry said it had taken note of the US President’s statement on bilateral trade and was currently studying its implications.

“India remains committed to safeguarding its interests, just as it has done with other trade agreements, including the recent Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the United Kingdom,” the ministry said in a statement.

India and the United States have been in prolonged negotiations aimed at reaching a “fair, balanced and mutually beneficial” bilateral trade deal.

The ministry stressed that the government attaches the utmost importance to protecting the welfare of Indian farmers, entrepreneurs, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), sectors likely to be impacted by any trade disruptions.
