The execution of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse sentenced to death in Yemen, has been postponed just a day before it was scheduled to take place. Sources told The North News that the delay was secured following sustained diplomatic engagement between Indian authorities and Yemeni officials. “Indian officials have been in regular contact with the local jail authorities and the prosecutor’s office,” a senior source confirmed.

The Indian government has been closely involved in the case since the beginning, providing consular support and legal assistance. In recent days, officials intensified efforts to allow more time for Priya’s family to negotiate a mutually agreeable settlement with the victim’s family, as permitted under Yemeni law.

The government’s intervention appears to have bought crucial time for a possible resolution through “blood money,” a practice recognised under Yemen’s legal system. Priya was convicted in 2017 for the murder of a Yemeni national, but her case has drawn attention both in India and internationally, with human rights advocates calling for clemency.
