In a significant development, Punjab’s Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has successfully thwarted a potential terror attack in the state by arresting an operative with ties to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The operation led to the recovery of a hand grenade from the suspect’s possession, according to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday.
The arrested individual, identified as Jaiveer Tyagi, also known as Jawed, hails from Village Baroli in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and has been residing in Ludhiana for the past 14-15 years. Tyagi was allegedly working in tandem with Sehlam, a foreign-based operative linked to the ISI, to orchestrate attacks targeting government infrastructure across various cities to disrupt the state’s peace and security.
Acting on a tip-off, CI Amritsar teams intercepted Tyagi in the Tara Wala Pul area of Amritsar, where he was waiting to meet his accomplices and execute the attack. Police swiftly launched an intelligence-driven operation, apprehending Tyagi and seizing the grenade.
Investigations have revealed that Tyagi had been in communication with Sehlam through encrypted messaging platforms and was specifically instructed to procure the grenade. Further inquiries are ongoing to uncover the broader network involved in this plot.
A case has been filed under the Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) in Amritsar.
