In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, Amritsar police have busted a drug cartel with the arrest of four individuals, including a 16-year-old juvenile, and seized 4.01 kg of heroin, Rs 20,000 in drug money, and three motorcycles, said Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Monday.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Tarsem Singh, 23, Amrit Singh, 21, both from Jalalabad, Fazilka; Ramanjit Singh, 19, from Tarn Taran; and a juvenile from Ferozepur. The group allegedly maintained close ties with Pakistan-based smugglers who used the Ferozepur sector to push drugs into India, providing exact coordinates for narcotics drops.
“The juvenile, whose identity has been withheld, played a crucial role by using boats to cross the Sutlej River and retrieve drug consignments from near the international border fencing,” said DGP Yadav. Two cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The Police are continuing investigations to trace the supply chain and anticipate further arrests and recoveries in the coming days.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar revealed that targeted operations led by senior officers, including DCP Harpreet Singh Mander, ADCP Navjot Singh, and ACP Detective Harminder Singh, resulted in the arrests in Chheharta and Cantonment areas. Efforts are underway to map the entire network of suppliers, dealers, and buyers involved.
