Tesla has begun recruiting in India, signaling its imminent plans to enter the country’s electric vehicle (EV) market. The move follows a meeting between CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s recent visit to the U.S. Tesla posted openings for 13 positions across Mumbai and Delhi on LinkedIn, spanning roles from customer engagement managers to service technicians and delivery operations specialists, according to media reports.
India’s EV market has long been a potential target for Tesla, but high import duties previously deterred its entry. Recent policy changes, such as a reduction in customs duties for luxury EVs priced over $40,000 from 110% to 70%, have made the market more appealing.
According to NDTV, at least five positions are open in both Mumbai and Delhi, while others, including the customer-facing roles, are exclusive to Mumbai. Tesla’s ongoing efforts to enter India come after years of engagement, yet it had hesitated due to the country’s taxing import duties.
