US President Donald Trump is not in a rush to engage with Chinese President Xi Jinping despite rising tensions in the trade war. China has quickly retaliated against Trump’s tariffs by imposing its own, including duties on US coal, gas, and other goods, restricting mineral exports, and launching an antimonopoly investigation into Google. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that a call between Trump and Xi is being arranged, according to The New York Times. However, other credible reports suggest that Trump is not prioritizing the meeting. Experts argue that China’s actions are designed to limit short-term damage while signaling its readiness for further conflict if needed, the news outlet said. The new tariffs, which will impact about $20 billion in U.S. exports, are set to take effect on February 10. Trump’s 10 percent tariff on all Chinese goods, effective from midnight, has sparked fears of rising inflation and potential harm to the global economy.
