The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced on Thursday the establishment of an AI Safety Institute to enhance AI-related safety and develop India’s own foundational AI model. The institute will support researchers, developers, and stakeholders in creating tools, frameworks, and processes to ensure AI safety. In addition, Vaishnaw revealed that 18 projects under the Application Development Initiative had been selected as part of the India AI Mission. The projects, primarily focused on agriculture, climate change, and learning disabilities, aim to drive technological advancements in these sectors.
The Union Minister further announced that India would introduce Foundational Models in the coming months, featuring superior algorithmic efficiency and enhanced data sets. These models will prioritize the preservation of India’s culture, mitigate biases, and cater to the needs of Indian citizens. Vaishnaw also emphasized the government’s commitment to ‘Democratizing Tech,’ disclosing that researchers, academia, startups, and MSMEs will gain access to 18,693 GPUs for AI compute units at competitive prices.
