An American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members crashed after a midair collision with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, DC, the news outlet The Guardian reported. A large search-and-rescue operation was launched in the Potomac River, where 18 bodies have been recovered, according to media reports. NBC reported that four people had been pulled alive from the water. Citing officials, the news outlet said all takeoffs and landings at the airport were halted as law enforcement helicopters searched for survivors. A US official confirmed that three soldiers were aboard the Black Hawk. President Donald Trump said he had been “fully briefed on this terrible accident” and added, “May God bless their souls.”
