How ‘SANJAY’ battlefield surveillance, flagged off by Rajnath Singh, will transform border defense capabilities?

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday launched the ‘SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS)’ in New Delhi. The automated system integrates data from ground and aerial battlefield sensors, processing it to create a unified common surveillance picture over a secured army data network and satellite communication network. It is designed to improve battlefield transparency and support future operations through a centralised web application, which provides real-time inputs to the Indian Army’s command and headquarters and decision support system.

SANJAY, equipped with advanced sensors and analytics, will enhance Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), enabling superior monitoring of India’s vast borders. It is expected to strengthen both conventional and sub-conventional operations in a Network Centric Environment. Developed jointly by the Indian Army and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), SANJAY supports India’s ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) initiative and the Army’s ‘Year of Technology Absorption’.

The system, valued at Rs 2,402 crore, will be inducted into all operational Brigades, Divisions, and Corps of the Indian Army in three phases from March to October 2025.
