New Delhi, January 16

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the formation of the Eighth Central Pay Commission to revise salaries and benefits for government employees. The decision comes as the term of the Seventh Pay Commission approaches its 2026 conclusion. Starting the process in 2025 allows adequate time for the commission to submit and review its recommendations. The last pay revision, based on the Seventh Pay Commission, was implemented in 2016. Since independence, India has constituted seven pay commissions to ensure fair compensation for its workforce, aligning pay structures with economic and fiscal considerations.
