The farmers’ agitation for legal guarantees on minimum support prices (MSP) has intensified, with 111 protesters beginning a fast-unto-death on Monday at the Khanauri border in solidarity with leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on hunger strike since November 26. The protest’s grim backdrop includes the suicide of Resham Singh, 55, from Tarn Taran, who consumed poison at the Shambhu border protest site on January 9. This followed the death of farmer Ranjodh Singh on December 18 at the same location, highlighting the growing desperation among demonstrators.
The agitation focuses on MSP guarantees and broader reforms to address the challenges faced by farming community. Despite repeated appeals, the government has yet to meet the core demands of the protesters, fueling further unrest. The ongoing protests are seen as a litmus test of the government’s commitment to addressing farmers’ grievances, as leaders like Dallewal maintain their hunger strike to spotlight their demands.
