The Meta issued an apology on Wednesday for a misleading statement made by its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, who claimed that most incumbent governments, including India’s, lost in post-COVID elections. In a post on X, Meta India’s Vice President for Public Policy, Shivnath Thukral, clarified that while this was true for several countries, it did not apply to India. He expressed regret for the error and reaffirmed India’s importance to Meta’s future.
The apology follows criticism from BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information Technology. Dubey yesterday called for Meta to apologize to both Indian Parliament and the people of India for disseminating incorrect information. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also condemned Zuckerberg’s remarks, asserting that India’s 2024 election results, which saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government secure a third term, contradict the claim.
