Nijjar murder case: Canada Supreme Court grants bail to four Indian nationals

A Canadian court has granted bail to four Indian nationals accused of the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. The four men – Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh – face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The case has drawn significant international attention, particularly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of being involved in Nijjar’s assassination. India has strongly rejected these claims, labeling them as “baseless”, the news outlet India Today reported.

The case has now been moved to the British Columbia Supreme Court, with the next hearing scheduled for February 11, 2025. The four accused were arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in May 2024, but the prosecution has faced criticism for delays in submitting evidence during preliminary hearings. To expedite the proceedings, the Canadian government invoked a “direct indictment,” bypassing the preliminary inquiry and moving the case directly to trial.
