New Delhi, January 7
The Centre government has designated land at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal in the Rajghat complex for a memorial dedicated to late President Pranab Mukherjee. Mukherjee’s daughter, former Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee, expressed her gratitude after receiving a letter from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informing her of the decision. In her post on X (formerly Twitter), Sharmistha Mukherjee thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the unexpected gesture. “Baba used to say that state honours should not be asked for, but should be offered. I’m so grateful that PM Modi did this to honour Baba’s memory,” she wrote. Mukherjee passed away in August 2020. The decision to create a memorial for him comes even as the government has yet to announce plans for a memorial for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024.
