New Delhi, September 3
In a major legislative move amidst the ongoing clash between TMC and BJP, the West Bengal Assembly unanimously passed the ‘Aparajita’ Bill on Tuesday. This makes West Bengal the first state to amend central laws related to rape, gang rape, and sexual crimes against children. The ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’ introduces the death penalty for those convicted of rape if their actions result in the victim’s death or a vegetative state. The Bill will now send to West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose and subsequently to President Droupadi Murmu for final approval.
