18 dead in New Delhi Railway Station stampede

At least 18 people were killed, and many others injured after a stampede broke out at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night due to severe overcrowding, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred around 10 pm on platforms 13 and 14, where thousands of Maha Kumbh devotees had gathered, triggering panic among passengers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, saying he was “distressed” by the tragedy.

“My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede,” Modi wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the situation was now under control, with Delhi Police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) responding swiftly. The injured were taken to hospital, and special trains were deployed to manage the surge in travelers.

Vaishnaw added that four special trains were arranged to ease congestion, and the rush had since subsided.
