Patiala, July 13

Two youths lost their lives after reportedly jumping into the Bhakra Canal to cross it as part of a bet near the Century Enclave Police Post on Nabha Road in Patiala. Three others were rescued after managing to climb out of the canal. According to information, a group of youths allegedly jumped into the canal one after another after making a bet to swim across. When one of them started drowning in the strong current, another youth entered the water in an attempt to save him. Both were swept away and drowned, while the remaining three managed to hold onto iron bars along the canal bank and return to safety.
The incident has raised questions about the enforcement of safety measures, as the district administration had already prohibited bathing and entry into the canal. Despite the ban, the tragedy occurred near a police post, prompting concerns over monitoring and public safety. The incident has left two families grieving the loss of their loved ones.
