Patiala, April 17

Students at Punjabi University, Patiala, staged a protest on campus on Thursday against the Centre’s reported decision to introduce new rules for the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), alleging that the move removes representation for Punjab and Haryana.

The demonstration was led by student leader Yadvinder Singh Yadu, along with members of the university’s student wing. Protesters raised slogans against the Central government, accusing it of interfering in matters concerning Punjab.

Addressing the gathering, Yadu claimed that the new BBMB rules amount to “direct interference” by the Centre in Punjab-related issues, adding that the decision is unjust and detrimental to the state’s interests. He urged all political parties and organisations to come together and form a united front against the Centre.

“The Center is encroaching upon Punjab’s rights, which is causing clear injustice to the state,” he said, calling for collective resistance.

Students also highlighted that universities across Punjab have historically played an active role in raising state-related issues. They said the protest was part of that ongoing tradition of student activism.

The demonstration remained peaceful, with students reiterating their demand for the restoration of Punjab and Haryana’s representation in the BBMB and greater autonomy in state-related matters.
