Singer had said he was ‘completely fine’ & not involved in incident; post removed minutes after appearing, police continue probe into firing & SUV fire
Chandigarh, September 9
Mystery surrounding the firing incident in Canada deepened on Wednesday after Punjabi singer-actor Ammy Virk deleted an Instagram Story within minutes of posting it on his official Instagram handle, in which he said he was “completely fine” and denied being involved in the reported incident.
The statement, posted on Virk’s official Instagram handle, urged people not to believe everything being “reported or circulated”. He said, “Waheguru di Meher naal I’m completely fine and I was not involved in any such reported or suggested incident.” The Story was subsequently deleted.
The development comes hours after reports linked the firing to a vehicle associated with Virk’s concert in Abbotsford, British Columbia, on September 5. The Abbotsford Police Department has confirmed that a vehicle travelling on the 2500 block of McCallum Road was fired upon shortly after 11 pm. No one was injured.
The police said occupants of a dark-coloured SUV fired multiple shots at the vehicle. Shortly afterwards, officers responding to a separate vehicle fire in the 2400 block of Sunnyside Place found an SUV fully engulfed in flames. Investigators are examining whether the two incidents are connected.
The Major Crime Unit has said early indications suggested the shooting was targeted, but police have not publicly identified the occupants of the vehicle that came under fire or established any connection between the incident and Virk.
Virk had performed at Rogers Forum in Abbotsford earlier that day. Several media reports subsequently linked the vehicle involved in the shooting to his concert convoy, although police have not confirmed who was inside the vehicle.
The singer’s deleted Instagram statement is the first direct public response from Virk amid the conflicting reports about the incident. His message did not provide details about the firing or explain the circumstances surrounding the reports.
The reason for deleting the Instagram Story was not clear at the time of filing.
The police are continuing to investigate the shooting and the possible connection with the vehicle fire.
