His wife alleged the family had repeatedly sought police action
Sangrur, September 21
A man from Namol village in Sangrur district was referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala after he allegedly consumed a toxic substance outside the Sangrur Deputy Commissioner’s office, with his wife alleging harassment by members of the village panchayat.
The man, identified as Jagga, was shifted to the Patiala hospital late on Sunday evening and is currently undergoing treatment, according to his wife.
Speaking about his condition, his wife, Manpreet Kaur, said doctors at the hospital were treating him and that he remained under medical care.
She alleged that around 12-13 days ago, members of the village panchayat had entered their house and assaulted her husband. She claimed that she and her mother-in-law were also injured in the incident.

Kaur said the family had repeatedly approached the police seeking action but alleged that no action was taken.
She further said that the village sarpanch threatened the family by invoking the name of an MLA. According to her, the continued harassment and alleged threats left her husband distressed, following which he took the extreme step on Sunday.
“We belong to a poor family, and we are seeking justice,” Kaur said.
The allegations regarding the assault, police inaction, and threats were made by the victim’s wife. The source material does not provide details of any police case, official response, or statement from the village panchayat.
BJP leader from Patiala Dehati Karun Kaura condemned the alleged attack on Sangrur resident Jagseer Singh and his family after he posted a social media video against drugs. According to the family, around 50 people allegedly attacked their house, assaulted Jagseer Singh and his wife, and took away CCTV cameras and the DVR. Jagseer Singh, who sustained serious injuries, was admitted to a Sangrur hospital and later referred to Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

Kaura said he visited Rajindra Hospital and met Jagseer Singh and his wife to enquire about their health. He demanded an impartial probe into the incident and questioned why Jagseer Singh was referred to Patiala if the required treatment was available in Sangrur.
Kaura also sought strict legal action against those responsible, recovery of the CCTV cameras and DVR, and adequate security for the family. He said the alleged attack on a person raising his voice against drugs raised serious questions about law and order in Punjab and maintained that such voices should not be suppressed through violence.
