Rahul Gandhi Raises Concerns About Religious Freedom in India

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has sparked a political debate with his remarks on religious freedom in India. “The fight in India is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a turban, whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a kada, or go to the Gurudwara. That’s what the fight is about, and it’s not just for Sikhs, but for all religions,” Rahul Gandhi said while speaking at an event in Herndon of Virginia, on Monday.

Previously while addressing the Indian diaspora in Washington DC, Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recalling how people in Delhi have approached him during drives to say, ‘Dar Nikal Gaya, Dar nhi lagta ab’,  the fear has gone now.Gandhi emphasized that fear, which took years of planning and money to create, vanished in a second and is now visible.

“The idea of Mr. Modi’s 58-inch chest and his direct connection with God is history now,” Gandhi stated. He also revealed that three months before the elections, Congress’ bank accounts were sealed, leaving them with no money for advertising, campaigns, or transporting their leaders. Yet, they fought the elections.

Gandhi also criticized the RSS, claiming their ideology views languages like Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, and Manipuri as inferior, even some regions as inferior. He posed a crucial question that are we going to have an India where people are free to believe, respect, and say what they want, or one where a few people decide everything?

He emphasized the unity of India and the role of the Indian diaspora as a bridge between the US and India, encouraging them to bring American values home while sharing Indian ideas and traditions in the US.

Rahul Gandhi is on a three-day visit to the US, addressing universities and engaging with the Indian diaspora.
