Morcha calls for statewide shutdown from 7 am to 2 pm, seeks parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara and release of Bandi Singhs.
Patiala, August 20
The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha held a press conference at the Electronic Media Club in Patiala, where Bapu Gurcharan Singh, Jagtar Singh Hawara’s religious father, made several announcements about the Punjab bandh scheduled for tomorrow.
Bapu Gurcharan Singh claimed that the bandh has received support from various organisations across Punjab, including business establishments and organizations associated with the government.
He said the bandh has been called in protest against the alleged police action against the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha in Chandigarh and to demand parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara so that he can meet his ailing mother. Several religious and political figures also extended their support to the bandh.
Bapu Gurcharan Singh announced that Punjab would remain completely closed from 7 am to 2 pm. He appealed for shops, schools, colleges, roads, and railway services to remain closed during this period. He also urged people planning to travel outside Punjab to leave today to avoid inconvenience tomorrow.
He said the bandh would put direct pressure on the government and have a significant impact if people participated collectively. He further alleged that both the Punjab and Central governments were reluctant to release the Bandi Singhs and demanded that they be granted their legal right to parole.
