Patiala, July 10
Patiala Police have arrested three persons allegedly involved in repeatedly throwing contraband into Patiala Central Jail during further investigation into FIR No. 187, which was registered following the recovery of mobile phones, data cables and narcotic substances from inside the prison.
Addressing a press conference, DSP-II Jangjit Singh Randhawa said the accused have been identified as Sanjeev, Sandeep alias Kali and Rajveer.
During the investigation, police found that one of the accused had allegedly thrown contraband packets into the jail on 45 occasions, while another had carried out the activity 25 times. The third accused allegedly rode the motorcycle used during the smuggling operations.
The DSP said the trio was preparing to throw another consignment into the jail when they were arrested. Police recovered 200 intoxicant pills from their possession.
According to the police, the accused were also carrying a security guard’s uniform, allegedly to mislead the public into believing they were authorised jail personnel while carrying out their activities.
DSP Randhawa said the accused had disclosed the identities of two more individuals allegedly linked to the operation, and police expect to arrest them soon.
Earlier, the jail administration had recovered cigarettes, mobile phones and data cables from the contraband packets found inside the prison.
In a separate development, Patiala Police also arrested a man accused of assaulting a Booth Level Officer (BLO) during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the Anant Nagar B area of Patiala Rural.
Providing details of the case, DSP Randhawa said FIR No. 182 was registered immediately after the incident. He said the dispute arose over the pasting of an official notice outside a house, during which Ravi Sharma allegedly assaulted BLO Harpreet Singh.
“The accused, Ravi Sharma, was arrested yesterday in connection with the assault,” DSP Randhawa said.
