Chandigarh, July 22
Punjab has become the first state in India to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mainstream subject for students from Class 1 to Class 12 in all Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) schools, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced on Wednesday.
In a post on X, Bains said AI would now be taught as a core subject in every government school affiliated with the PSEB, extending the programme to children in both cities and villages.
“From today, Artificial Intelligence is a core subject in every PSEB school across Punjab. Every child — city or village — will learn the skills the world’s leading nations are racing to teach theirs,” he wrote in a post on X. Calling the move a milestone in the state’s education reforms, the minister said Punjab had become the first state to make AI a mainstream subject across all school grades, from Class 1 to Class 12.
The initiative is aimed at equipping students with digital and emerging technology skills from an early age, as governments around the world increasingly integrate AI into school education. The state government believes the programme will help prepare students for a technology-driven future while narrowing the digital divide between urban and rural classrooms.
