Patiala, July 9
Multiple employee unions on Thursday blocked all entry gates of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) Head Office in Patiala, disrupting normal functioning and leaving employees inside the premises as negotiations with union leaders continued.
Around 1 pm, protesters from different organisations shut both main entrances to the headquarters. Members of the All Diploma Degree Technical Apprenticeship Association and the Deceased Dependants Committee blocked Gate No. 1 while demanding employment opportunities.
The rear gate of the Head Office was blocked by members of the Meter Reader Union, who also closed the road near the Sheranwala Gate, causing further disruption in the area.
The Meter Reader Union said its members had been demanding the creation of a basic employment grade for several days. Union representatives said they had been working on short-term contracts of three to four months for many years.
They said they had held several meetings with the minister concerned and the PSPCL Chairman and Managing Director regarding their demands. Despite repeated assurances during those meetings, no concrete action had been taken to resolve the issue.
At the time of filing this report, all gates of the PSPCL Head Office remained closed, and employees inside the office were facing significant inconvenience while talks between the protesting unions and officials continued.
