Poor Conditions Disrupt Afghanistan-New Zealand Test Match Opener

The Afghanistan-New Zealand Test one-off was a historic one as it was called off without a single ball being bowled. This was partially because of the rain, which caused the delay in the practice sessions and the match, while the lack of proper facilities at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex compounded to these problems.

While there was no rain on the day of the match, the inexperienced ground staff struggled to get the field ready. In addition to the shortcomings of the venue, the damp patches near mid-on, mid-wicket and within the 30-yard circle, inspected by the umpires and a few New Zealand players, were also cause for concern.

These problems were not limited to on-field but continued off-field as well. These problems were mostly the lack of proper infrastructure, like a proper media stand, enough seating for fans, and basic amenities like water, power, etc.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) voiced their frustration, saying that this is a huge mess; we are never coming back here. “India is our home, and when we host teams, we need a venue that reflects that. Hopefully, we will get a good venue here in India,” said an ACB official. While this sports complex doesn’t fall under the purview of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association, attention now turns to BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla to see if any improvements will be made.
