New Delhi, April 14
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on women across India to actively support the proposed women’s reservation bill, urging them to write to their local MPs ahead of a crucial Parliament session on Tuesday.
In a letter shared on X, Modi said public encouragement could strengthen lawmakers’ resolve, adding that their decisions would have a long-lasting impact. “Remind them they are shaping something that will be felt for centuries,” he said.
Marking the birth anniversary of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, the Prime Minister paid tribute to his contribution to India’s constitutional values. He described the moment as significant, with Parliament expected to reconvene soon to consider an amendment linked to the Nari Shakti Vandan initiative.
Modi said there was growing enthusiasm among women nationwide, with many seeing the proposal as an opportunity to play a larger role in building a developed India. He highlighted women’s increasing presence across sectors such as business, science, arts and sports, calling it one of the most positive changes in recent years.
He noted that women athletes are breaking records and challenging stereotypes, while grassroots initiatives like self-help groups are helping drive economic independence and empowerment.
Despite broad agreement over the years on increasing women’s representation, Modi said past efforts had not fully succeeded. He referred to early initiatives, including those associated with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and said India had granted equal voting rights at independence, ahead of many countries.
Looking ahead to 2047, when India will mark 100 years of independence, he said women’s participation in policymaking would be essential to achieving the vision of a developed nation. He described their role as “non-negotiable” for strengthening governance and accelerating progress.
The Prime Minister also warned that any delay in passing the legislation would be unjust to women, stressing that stronger representation would make democracy more vibrant. He added that upcoming elections, including those in 2029, would benefit from the implementation of the reservation.
Modi concluded by seeking public support for the bill and extending greetings for upcoming festivals, wishing citizens health, happiness and prosperity.
