Patiala’s Central Correctional Jail has once again come under scrutiny after an inmate who was seriously injured in an assault inside the prison died while undergoing treatment on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Ajay Kumar alias Smarty, a resident of Lakad Mandi in New Malwa Colony, Patiala. He succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Sector 32 Hospital in Chandigarh.
According to police, FIR No. 190 was registered at Tripuri Police Station against several undertrial prisoners under various sections of the law in connection with the assault.
Confirming the development, DSP Jangjit Singh Randhawa said the jail authorities informed the police about the incident on July 11, following which a case was immediately registered and an investigation was initiated.
He said two inmates were injured in the attack. Ajay Kumar alias Smarty later died during treatment at the Chandigarh hospital on the previous night.
The police said the investigation is ongoing and legal action is being taken against the other accused allegedly involved in the incident.
