Shimla, June 6
High drama unfolded in the Sanjauli area on Saturday after a minor girl was allegedly filmed and blackmailed by a native of Uttar Pradesh. The accused, identified as Ubaid, allegedly lured the minor to a shop where he also attempted to molest and touch her inappropriately.
The incident sparked intense public outrage after the local police failed to make an arrest even 24 hours after a First Information Report (FIR) was formally registered at the Women’s Police Station. Annoyed by the administrative delay, activists from the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti took to the streets in protest, blocking traffic and bringing Sanjauli to a standstill.
In a dramatic turn of events, the agitating committee members tracked down the accused, parading him through the streets of Sanjauli while demanding immediate and strict legal action. During the demonstration, the minor victim also came forward, stating that the accused had recorded her video and molested her, and demanded the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrator.
As tensions escalated, the Sanjauli Police rushed to the scene, defused the situation, and took the accused into custody for further interrogation. Following the detention, police officials confirmed that a thorough investigation has been initiated and that further legal proceedings will be conducted strictly in accordance with the law.
Vijay Sharma, the coordinator of the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, stated that the public was forced to take to the streets because the police failed to act within the 24-hour ultimatum issued by the committee. He emphasized that law enforcement agencies must ensure immediate intervention in sensitive cases involving minors to maintain public faith in the law and order machinery.
