Residents struggle to move out; farmers unable to transport vegetables, cash crops to markets

Manali, September 8

Connectivity to Karpit village in Lahaul-Spiti’s Mayad Valley has been disrupted after its only bridge was washed away, leaving residents struggling to move in and out of the area and farmers facing difficulties in transporting vegetables and other cash crops to markets.

Former Himachal Pradesh minister Govind Singh Thakur raised the issue after returning from a recent visit to Lahaul-Spiti. Speaking to reporters in Manali, he said rising river water and the damaged bridge had created a precarious situation for the village.

Thakur said the loss of the bridge had left residents without a proper route for movement. Even walking in and out of the village had become difficult, he said, adding that farmers were unable to transport their produce to markets.

He urged the Himachal Pradesh and Central Governments to take immediate measures to restore access to Karpit and protect the village from landslides and rising river water.

He also sought urgent restoration of the connecting routes to ensure safe movement of residents and enable farmers to transport their agricultural produce.
