Ongoing Construction Delays at Zirakpur Flyovers Pose Safety Risks and Traffic Jams

Over two years after construction began on two flyovers at Zirakpur, the project remains unfinished, causing significant safety risks and traffic congestion on the Chandigarh-Ambala national highway. The flyovers, located near the Best Price store-Singhpura Chowk and near the McDonald’s light points before the Ghaggar bridge, span about 1.5 km. A legal dispute between a landowner and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the Supreme Court has stalled progress on the Singhpura Chowk flyover, with completion expected to take at least six more months, The Tribune Reported. Conservative estimates suggest a further delay of one year, though the NHAI and district administration have not provided a definitive timeline

The news outlet further said that initially scheduled for completion within 18 months at a cost of ₹40 crore, the project began in December 2021 but has faced multiple deadline breaches and escalating costs. The NHAI is considering completing one side of the Singhpura Chowk flyover while awaiting land clearance for the other side. Currently, the Delhi-Chandigarh side is clear, but the Chandigarh-Ambala side remains obstructed, resulting in a hazardous bend that disrupts smooth traffic flow. This bend has created a dangerous situation where heavy vehicles on the national highway and light city traffic converge, raising safety concerns.
